Five missionaries gave their lives in the Ecuadorian jungle

On January 8, 1956, five missionaries gave their lives in a remote part of the Ecuadorian jungle on a beach. These missionaries were trying to reach a hostile tribe with the gospel. They had landed their little plane on a beach area of the Curray River, only to be ambushed and speared a couple of days later.

Today this beach area has become known as ‘Palm Beach’ and together with two remaining brothers of those slain, a mixed group of missionaries and interested individuals, and 200 some Waodani people, the descendants of that hostile Acua tribe. This year was the 50-year anniversary of the missionaries who died; the Waodani people attending the anniversary came from miles around, from various jungle locations, some walked as far as a three-day journey just to attend.

The missionaries who have worked with the Waodani people for the last 30-years to bring God’s word made all this possible.

Some of the men who had killed the missionaries said prayers, shared communion, and nine young Waodani was baptized in the river. Everything from the singing that lasted longer then anyone intended was based on the enthusiastic audience, to the testimonies, to a traditional dance outside on Saturday evening, one service last more then 4 hours.

The first language of the Waodani is Spanish; they had the New Testament translated into their own language so they could read from it. Many of the Waodani leaders would talk about the past. A common phrase was, ‘I cannot explain to you how much of a difference following Jesus has made in my life’. They would often go on to encourage the youth to turn from their ways, and follow Jesus. The elders seem to be concerned with the next generation. The youth seem to be trying to fit into the modern world, rejecting their culture and family. This is much the same as what we see in our culture.

50-years ago five missionaries gave their lives in the service of our Lord. These deaths planned a seed, a seed that has grown and flourished, spreading God’s words of life and the future continues.

Gospel for Asia President K.P. Yohannan is calling on Christians around the world to pray and fast in support of believers in India who are under threat of forced conversion, physical harm, and even death.

Christians in the Dangs district of Gujarat are considering whether to evacuate in advance of a major gathering of Hindu extremist groups. The Shabri Kumbh festival, to be held Feb. 11-13, could attract a half-million Hindus chanting the slogan, “Arise Oh Hindus! Throw out the Christians!”

“The total Christian population of Dangs today is more than the 8,000 often quoted,” Dr. Yohannan said. But the concern is that the gathering could unleash a wave of violence against tribal Christians.

“Hindu homes are being marked with yellow flags,” he explained, “leaving the small population of Christians extremely vulnerable to attack-as many already have been.

“The anti-Christian extremists are doing it to make a statement to the rest of India that this pattern of re-conversion can be used across the nation. This is the pattern they used for the persecution of Muslims a few years ago.”

Persecution of Christians is not uncommon across India, but it is especially dangerous in Gujurat, where there is a history of mass murder, including the killing of women and children. This is done by the most aggressive, extreme Hindu elements, who believe in killing those who oppose them.

Dr. Yohannan said more churches have been destroyed in Gujarat than anywhere else India.

“Christians in the West must resolve to pray and fast,” he said. “The situation is urgent; Christians all over India are in peril. In just the past few days we have received reports of our native missionaries being beaten and church meetings attacked in two other Indian states. Another of our missionaries was recently kidnapped. Unfortunately, this happens almost daily, and the pace is increasing. The fanatics are becoming bolder and bolder.

“We pray that God will protect the innocent tribal people who have been faithfully following Christ, and for the missionaries who are ministering among them, bringing them God’s hope for a new life that has been denied by the Hindus for centuries.”

According to Dr. Yohannan, the fanatics’ hate of Christians is being driven by fear and by selfish greed. He said prayers should also be directed for the persecutors.

“Only Christ can change their hearts,” he said.
